Bancoult's early years were spent on the island of Peros Banhos, one of the many islands comprising the Chagos Archipelago, which was under British colonial rule at the time. In 1967, when he was just 17 years old, Bancoult and his fellow Chagossians were forcibly evicted from their homes by the British government to make way for the construction of a military base on Diego Garcia, the largest island in the archipelago.

This traumatic event marked the beginning of Bancoult's lifelong activism. Despite being displaced from his homeland, he refused to remain silent in the face of injustice. Bancoult embarked on a relentless campaign to seek redress for himself and his fellow Chagossians, who were scattered across Mauritius and the Seychelles.
